breathtaking contemporary spiritual jazz from south africa ... when tumi mogorosi composed this suite for jazz musicians and opera vocalists he had never heard the previous successful attempts by donald byrd, max roach or mary lou williams to combine these seemingly unfriendly aesthetics. tumi, born in 1987 and already an accomplished drummer on the joburg scene, was at the time studying music at the tshwane university of pretoria where he became close friends with opera singers working on the same campus. so unlike some of his us peers tumis beliefs are not religious.

released on defected, no doubt is exemplary of south africas cueburs ability to construct the organic and cheerful sounds prominent within the flourishing south african house scene. throughout the track is a blend of raw sounding percussion that when combined with marrisa guzmans delicate yet captivating voice results in a warm and leisurely anthem. on remix duties is the prestigious shlomi aber whose rendition still utilises guzmans mesmerising vocals whilst making use of his signature techno elements to create a more innovative twist.

pick a piper was conceived in 2008 along with band mates angus fraser and dan roberts, and following two eps, the band is set to release their debut self-titled debut album. the album is made up of eight very different songs, all with one thing in common: each is built upon the foundation of its own ingenious rhythm structure, with musical layers meticulously applied, up until the vocals, which are added right at the very end, if at all. song writing done back-to-front, which is also fitting in this case because: brad weber? isnt that...? yes indeed! brad is also the drummer for caribou.
